Before and after you arrive in Bournemouth…
Visas
You may need a visa to come to Britain, so apply as soon as possible. The UK
Foreign Office Visa website
gives information about visas and how to apply. We can help you too! And
please tell the School as soon
as possible when you get your visa, or if your application is refused (see our
Visa Info page for more information).
Money
You can change money easily in Bournemouth. Follow this link to calculate
the current
exchange rate. Credit cards are accepted
nearly everywhere. If you are here for more than 6 months, we can help you open a
bank account.
Health
If you use a particular kind of
medication, you will need to bring your own supply. For example, you cannot buy antibiotics here without a doctor’s
prescription, and doctors only give them to patients if they are absolutely
necessary. Remember that names of medicines
vary from country to country and certain medicines may not be available in
England. But painkillers such as aspirin or paracetemol (for headaches, etc) are easily available and very cheap.
Bicycles
Most students hire a bicycle because it is the
cheapest, quickest and easiest way to travel around Bournemouth. Long-stay
students usually buy a bicycle...but remember, you can sell your bicycle
to another student when you leave!
Contacting Home
telephoning - Mobile phones are very
popular. Many students like to bring their own phones with them and buy a ‘pay-as-you-go’
sim-card to use in Britain. International calls are expensive on mobile
phones, but there are many phone-cards available that allow you to make cheap
international calls from normal phones.
email - The School has a wireless access point and you may bring your own
laptop computer and connect to the internet. Before you leave home be sure that
your computer is correctly configured for wireless access and that it has
anti-virus software installed
Bus Passes in Bournemouth
It is sometimes more convenient and cheaper to buy a 'Yellow Card', which you can use on
Bournemouth Yellow buses. The town's Wilts & Dorset and More red buses also
have special 'DayRider' fares.
Accommodation
Most
students choose host family accommodation because it allows them to get to know
a new culture and provides the best opportunity to practise the English
language.
In your family, you will usually have a choice for breakfast: cereal and toast (or bacon & egg if you want
it)
with tea, coffee and/or orange juice.
English
families sometimes eat their evening meal quite early. This could be anytime
between 5.30 and 7.00pm. The good thing about this is that you can then go
out afterwards and meet your friends and socialise.
The
English eat a lot of potatoes so be prepared to enjoy mashed, roast, boiled and baked
potatoes!
It's
important to tell your Host Family when you plan to get home or if you'll miss or
be late for a meal.
If you
want to buy you’re your own food sometimes, there's an inexpensive
Lidl supermarket close to the school. There are others around town.
You will
not need to bring sheets or towels, as your host family will provide these for
you. Your host family will also do your washing for you. If you have
clothes which are very delicate, you can take them to one of the dry-cleaners in
Bournemouth.
It is also possible
to stay in your own rented flat, a shared house or a bed-and-breakfast hotel -
our Accommodation staff will help you find something suitable.
In self-catering
accommodation, you will have to bring your own towels and provide your
own bedding (pillows. duvets and covers). You should also remember to buy some
food and milk to get you through your first day and night!
UK News and TV
Before you come to Bournemouth, you can familiarise yourself with the current events in the UK by visiting some
of the many TV, Radio and newspaper internet pages. Here are a few examples:

By the way, our UK Studies Director, Geoff Allen, is also a journalist with BBC
Radio Solent, which means you could learn 'BBC English' at Bournemouth's Centre
School of English!
The Weather
Britain
is famous for having bad weather! Actually, it’s not always bad, but
it does change a lot...it may be sunny in the morning, but rainy in the
afternoon, so many British people carry a small umbrella
everywhere.
The
average temperature in January (the coldest month) is 3.7°C. If you are coming
in winter, bring a warm jacket, gloves and a scarf.
In
July/August (the warmest months), the average is around 22°C, although it can
reach over 30°C. You should also bring sweaters and a light jacket, in
case it gets cool.

Police registration
If the stamp in your passport says "the holder is also required to
register with the police", you must register within 7 days at:
Aliens Department, Madeira Road, Bournemouth
We will tell you how to get there! You will need two passport-sized photos, your passport, the
letter from the Centre School of English confirming your course dates and the
police registration fee
of £36.
