Grammar Exercises

"How many tenses are there in English?"

Here, they've put together some easy-peazy grammar exercises to see if you could get to love grammar too!?

Pre-Intermediate

Exercise 1:  Present Perfect or Past Simple?

a) I _____ (live) in Switzerland for two years and then I _____ (move)  back to England.

b) I _____ (live) in Bournemouth for seven years. I don't think that I will  move again now.

c) Jeff Allinson _____ (write) a lot of books. He _____ (write) his first book 18 years ago.

Exercise 2:  Tense Revision - correct these sentences

a) What have you done yesterday?

b) Where did you buying your new dress?

c) I have known John since three years.

d) I study English for a long time.

e) She has been to Canada five years ago

Answers - Pre-Intermediate

Exercise 1:

a) lived / moved

b) have been living / have lived

c) has written / wrote

Exercise 2:

a) What did you do yesterday?

b) Where did you buy your new dress?

c) I have known John for three years.

d) I have been studying / have studied English for a long time.

e) She went to Canada five years ago.

Intermediate

1. Multi-word verbs - complete the sentences:

a) Could you drop me _____ at the church and I'll walk the rest of  the way.

b) I'm really looking forward _____ my holiday.

c) Call me when you're ready and I'll pick you _____ .

d) Take _____ your coat and make yourself at home.

e) My mum was woken _____ by my baby sister crying.

2. Verb forms - Fill in the gaps with the correct form of the verb in brackets:

c) On December 9th next year, my parents _____ (be married) for             25 years.
